Dear Parents and Guardians,
The administration and staff are committed to providing a safe and healthy learning environment for all of our students. As part of our ongoing efforts to be proactive in addressing health and safety concerns, we are implementing new measures to combat the issue of vaping on our campus. Specifically, we will be installing vape sensors in the restrooms and locker rooms.
The primary goal of installing these vape sensors is to deter and detect vaping activity within areas of the building that are difficult to monitor. Vaping, particularly among adolescents, has been a growing concern due to its potential health risks and has negatively impacted the overall school environment. These sensors will help us identify and address vaping incidents more effectively, thereby contributing to a healthier and safer school community.
The vape sensors are designed to detect the presence of chemical vapor in the air. When vapor is detected, the sensors will send real-time alerts to designated school personnel. This allows us to respond promptly and address the situation appropriately. It is important to note that these sensors are not equipped with cameras. They are solely focused on detecting the presence of vapor.
We understand that privacy is a significant concern. Please be assured that our approach prioritizes respect for student privacy. The vape sensors are installed in a way that ensures they only monitor for the presence of vapor and do not invade personal privacy. The sensors will be placed discreetly in restrooms and locker rooms, and their sole function is to enhance the safety and well-being of our students.
History has shown that students get very creative when hiding the vapes they are using. To that end, we will be incorporating the use of wand metal detector to "search" any student who is found in the location at the time the vape sensor goes off. This will only become necessary if the student refuses to turn over the vape device. If a vape sensor sends an alert to administration that a vapor is detected in any location, students present at that time may be brought to the Principal/Assistant Principal’s office and be subject to a search using the metal detecting wand. Again, this will only be necessary should a student refuse to turn over the vape device. We understand that privacy is a major concern, and we want to reassure you that our use of wand metal detectors will be conducted with the utmost respect and sensitivity and only when necessary. The wand detectors will be used in a manner that prioritizes dignity and privacy.
Students who are found in possession of a vape device will be suspended for a minimum of 1 day out of school. Students who refuse to cooperate with administration will be suspended for a minimum of 1 day out of school. Officer Mair will check each vape confiscated for the presence of marijuana or other illegal substances.
Please consider having a conversation with your child about this important issue. Thank you for your continued support as we work together to ensure the health and safety of our students. We believe that these new measures will make a positive difference in our school community.
Sincerely,
Bob Svencner
